About INTERPLAN:

INTERPLAN is a project that aims to provide an integrated operation planning tool towards the pan-European network, to support the EU in reaching the expected low-carbon targets, while maintaining network security. INTERPLAN will provide a methodology for a proper representation of a “clustered” model of the pan-European network, with the aim to generate grid equivalents as a growing library able to cover all relevant system connectivity possibilities occurring in the real grid, by addressing operational issues at all network levels (transmission, distribution and TSOs-DSOs interfaces).

On 18 December 2017 the kick-off meeting of the INTERPLAN project took place at the ENEA Research Center in Naples (IT). Coordinated by ENEA, further partners in the project are AIT, DERlab, University of Cyprus (UCY), Fraunhofer IEE, and Instytut Energetyki (IEn).

The European Union (EU) energy security policy faces significant challenges as we move towards a pan-European network based on the wide diversity of energy systems across member states. In such a context, the EU needs novel solutions to support the future operation of the electricity system in order to increase security of supply and account for the increasing share of renewable energy sources.

To support the EU in reaching the expected low-carbon targets, while maintaining network security, the INTERPLAN project will provide an integrated operation planning tool for the pan-European electricity network. In this process, the project will develop a methodology for representing a clustered model of the pan-European network. By addressing operational issues at all network levels – transmission, distribution and TSOs-DSOs interfaces – INTERPLAN aims to generate grid equivalents as a growing library covering all relevant system connectivity possibilities in the real grid.

By involving industry stakeholders in the development process and continuously obtaining their feedback, INTERPLAN will ensure that the project developments cater for the needs of DSOs and TSOs.

The project started with the assessment of the technical and regulatory status of the European electricity grid. This process will facilitate defining significant use cases and adaptive clustering methods that can support the planning and operational tools of INTERPLAN.
